Brainstorm on Writing Program Needs (for group project)
  1. One continual study is how to improve the usability of our sites, to explain and define each tool's function and then make it usable.
    • Right now I think we have a good grip on the collegewriting site. I think its design is okay. Yet we still need to organize the student writing samples and get graded copies up so students and teachers get a better sense of sample a, b and c papers.
    • Also, we need more stuff on teaching the specific projects. I mean, e.g., what do we all really know about globalization?
  2. I would love to see a project that helped develop the rubric.
    • For the FYC community becaue of his past experiene w/ software development I have asked Gary Simmons to lead an effort designed to improve this tool. I'm hopeful that Gary's group can study where folks go wrong when they use the tool and where there are bugs in the tool. Plus, how can we make the tool more usable?
    • Beyond Gary's groups focus on usability and tool development, a related effort could be to analyze the results of the rubric for our assessment effort AND
    • Perhaps anothr effort to find patterns in teacher's responses and come up w/ a way to package them for easier use by teachers, to make grading less tedious.
  3.  I still think we need better peer review materials. We need to better explain why we teach peer review..and come up w/ alternative ways to do peer review OUTSIDE OF CLASSES. We need to research the viability of hybrid approaches, whicinvolve half the class time and more out of class work.

  1. We could also develop some resources to help students and teachers better understand what it means to teach/write/speak/think from a rhetorical perspective.

  1. For project 2 in 1101 would it make sense to add a project on analyzing the rhetoric of financial web pages? Given the turmoil to world market, this strikes me as a timely and interdisciplinary project.
