Senior Memoir Project
Image Preview   Bryan and I have been working on a project that offers students the chance to explore their past, as well as to contribute to their family's future. The idea is for the student to conduct an interview with a senior family member, or to interview a senior in a local senior community, and then write a memoir of this interview with a possible goal of sharing that with the family. How many families have no written record of the memories of their elders? What a great gift!
Another component of this project would be the option to use new media as a podcast of the interview, or digital video. We would use the Shoah Foundation videos as examples of interview techniques.
We are busy working on the details to enhance and develop this project, but are convinced of its potential value. My wife works as a Geriatric Care Manager assisting families and their seniors, and would attest to the power this project has to offer. Any ideas would be welcome!

I think this is a terrific idea. Students need specific advice on preparing for the interview, recording it...and then writing about it. I can see a podcast possibility as well....I'd ask for photos 4 sure

I really like the idea of incorporating an element of family history into a memoir project for a couple of reasons: First, many students either have little sense of their family's history or do not have a good avenue for exploring it. Second, I think this dovetails nicely with our responsibility to incorporate historical perspective into our projects.

Good job guys!

I was given a similar project in high school. It took the place of a final senior year paper, and we had to basically write a family member's memoir using interviews with family members. The problem I ran up against with my chosen subject, was that there was a literal 10 year gap in her life she refused to talk about. I didn't know this until way into the process, and by then I was committed to this subject, etc. My teacher was really understanding, I'm just letting you know possible pit-falls.

This would be a great project. As an undergrad, I actually wrote a piece about one of my uncles and it has proven to be one of my most prized pieces to this day. I have even considered trying to expand it more by doing a real interview with my uncle (as that was not part of my previous assignment).

Family members are so diverse and we can learn so much from them! I think the students would react well to this project.
