Course Objectives
· Learn about the theories and research informing practices in the composition program
· Gain comfort teaching in the composition classroom
· Learn how to contribute to the FYC Program.
· Learn to use a variety of pedagogical software tools.
Class Activities
· Post a detailed schedule and syllabus for ENC 1101 and ENC 1102 at http://tc.english.usf.edu.
· Observe two different teachers and write two summaries of classroom visits. (Complete these observations in the first two- to- seven weeks. Publish your teaching observations at the class discussion forum).
· Read scholarship in Rhetoric and Composition. Become aware of pedagogical theories and approaches.
· Contribute to the FYC Wiki or Teacher's Wiki in substantive ways. Keep track of your contributions and email me an overview of your contributions in week 13.
· Critique and grade sample essays as a classroom activity.
· Meet one-on-one with me to share your comments and grades on five sample essays before they are returned to students.
· Work in a group to develop a writing project for the 1101 or 1102 curriculum or program publication (Newsletter, textbook, etc).
· Use Flashlight to complete a mid-semester evaluation for each class you teach; share results with instructor.

· The St. Martin’s Guide to Teaching Writing (free from Bedford)
Attendance Policy
You will be allowed one unexcused absence without any academic penalty. Beginning with your second absence, your grade will drop one letter grade (B+ to B, for instance). Excused absences, as outlined by the University, will be permitted with proper notification (these include school trips, jury duty, etc. and in some cases, documented illnesses).
In the event of an emergency, it may be necessary for USF to suspend normal operations. During this time, USF may opt to continue delivery of instruction through methods that include but are not limited to: Blackboard, Elluminate, Skype, and email messaging and/or an alternate schedule. It’s the responsibility of the student to monitor Blackboard site for each class for course specific communication, and the main USF, College, and department websites, emails, and MoBull messages for important general information.
Grade Percentages
- 25 % Class Participation: (contributions to classroom discussions, online community contributions).
- 30 % Group Project: You will develop a project option - or the equivalent - for 1101 or 1102 and present on it during weeks 11-13 of the semester 20 % Spring Course
- Homework. You will receive contribution grades for the following assignments.
- 10% Peer Evaluations: Two classroom observations, narrative summary in discussion forum, and report of observations to class (by Week 10)
- 5% Review Papers with Instructor: One meeting with instructor to review a stack of student papers (by Week 12)
- 5% Flashlight Survey: Show results with the instructor (by Week 13)
- 5% Preparation: Post a detailed schedule and syllabi for 1101 and 1102 at http://tc.english.usf.edu (by Week 14)
